This inbox is not a black hole. Notes sent to RegexMate are read by the team that maintains the tools, so the more context your message carries, the quicker it can be dealt with.
Since RegexMate is a regular expression tester, most of what arrives concerns working out why a greedy quantifier over-matches — and the occasional result that seems off. Either is welcome here.
Where to write
You can reach us directly at support@regexmate.com. We aim to reply within one to two business days.
Include this
- The name of the tool and, if you have it, the page URL.
- What you entered — for RegexMate that is usually the pattern and test text you enter — rounded is fine, since we only need to repeat the arithmetic.
- What the result should have been, and what it was instead.
- Your operating system and browser, if it is a display issue.
Anything concerning working out why a greedy quantifier over-matches is easier to answer when you include the page address, so we can look at the same tool you did.
Reporting a wrong result
A wrong result here is a bug, not a matter of taste. On RegexMate the rule is that it runs your pattern against the sample with backtracking limits so a catastrophic pattern cannot lock the tab, and it highlights each match and capture group with its position so you can see exactly what the engine matched; if what you see contradicts that, either an input fell outside the model or a rounding case was missed. Give us the inputs and the expected value and we will reproduce it.
